'Food Bank' Coimbatore hosts its 100th food distribution drive!

With the aim of creating a hunger free nation, Food Bank Coimbatore came into being more than a year ago. Food Bank Coimbatore is a non-profit organization that is involved in distribution of food that has been cooked for distribution per se.

Ever since Food Bank came into being, on Thursdays and Sundays members, volunteers and sponsors gather in one location and off they go on their two wheeler, distribution food to the needy in various parts of the city. So far through the various food drives, around 10,000 packets of food have been distributed to the needy who cannot afford to purchase food.

Today, 18 December, Food Bank successfully hosted its 100th food distribution drive. This massive cooking drive was organized at VOC Park in the city. Several volunteers gathered at this venue to cook and pack food for this 100th food drive.

Speaking to SimpliCity, Vaishnavi founder of Food Bank Coimbatore shared “I am very happy about the 100th food drive as it is a milestone for us. For this food drive the work like cutting vegetables started yesterday 3 pm and we had a cook assisting us.

This morning the preparation started by around four and we have cooked vegetable biriyani, raita and a sweet. Around 80 plus volunteers have assembled. Many people too seeing our advertisement came forward to help us. Today more than 1,000 plus food packets will be served in 65 areas across the city to needy people including the inmates of orphanage and old age homes in and around our city.”

A group of student volunteers from Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science, joined hands with Food Bank for this massive food drive. Sabitha and Arun staff of the catering department along with 10 students from this college participated in this food drive. The students helped in cooking food and also assisted in distributing the food packets.

Sabitha says “This is a one of its kind initiative and is very appreciative as many social service organizations collect money in the name of donations and we are not sure if the money actually reaches the intended beneficiary. However, here no money is involved and needy are served with best home cooked food which is remarkable thing.” She also shares that she will motivate many more students and colleagues of her educational institution to join Food Bank in creating a hunger free nation.
