Track status of your police complaints through SMS alerts

The Tamil Nadu police have started a new service in which complainants can find out the status of their cases through short message service (SMS). Like many services, where you get confirmation and details through text messages, the complainant will get a system-generated text message informing him her the details of the FIR. The facility was started on 17th December.

Additional Director General of Police, State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), Seema Agarwal told TOI that once the case was registered and the first information report was filed at the police station, the SMS would be sent to the petitioner's mobile number.

"Many a time the complainant keeps running from door to door to get a copy of the FIR.Sometimes they don't even know where to go. This service has been started to sort out such issues," she said.

In the case of online complaints, the message will read "TNPOL: enquiry in the online complaint <> given by you has been completed. The following disposal has been given: <>." In the case of Community Service Register issued (CSR), it will read: "TNPOL: Enquiry in the complaint <> given by you has been completed As far as cognisable offences are concerned, the SMS alert will be sent when the investigations are over and the charge sheet is filed in the court.
