Guard shoots, kills thief in self-defence

A security guard shot and killed a thief who attacked him with a log in Nagarabavi, off Magadi road early on Friday morning. Police said the guard would not be charged as he fired in self-defence and was carrying a licensed weapon.

At 2.30am on Friday, security guard Mohan Kumar had just finished his rounds of a half-constructed bungalow in Nagarabavi, when he heard a noise and the dogs began to bark. "I picked up my revolver and went to the ground floor from where the noise came," he said. "I saw three men entering the house."

Police said the three-member gang had come to steal iron and copper material from the house. "When I shouted, two of them ran away but the third man attacked me with a log," Mohan told police. The guard then fired at the man. "I didn't want to kill him. I just fired to save myself," he told police.

A senior police officer said, "It is a licensed revolver and Mohan shot in self-defence. We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the thief and Mohan is the complainant," additional commissioner of police KSR Charan Reddy said.

The dead man was identified as Bettaiah Ningegowda, a resident of Malagala. Bettaiah's older brother Boregowda arrived at Kamakshipalya police station to claim the body.

The bungalow in which the attempted robbery took place belongs to T N Javarayee Gowda, a JD(S) leader, who contested the last assembly election from Yeshwanthapur. Neighbours said he started construction in 2007 but work picked up pace only in November.
