20-year old male elephant that died in Madukkarai Forest Range was affected by Anthrax


News of death of yet another tusker has been reported. Yesterday, a 20-year old male pachyderm was reported dead, close to a dry stream in the Madukkarai Forest Range, in Karadimadai. Subsequently, a post-mortem was carried out by veterinarian, Dr Manoharan and the cause of death was found to be anthrax, an infection that is caused by bacteria.

It was also reported that this male elephant had serious injuries on its back that could have been caused due to a fight with other elephants. Following the death of this elephant due to anthrax infection, forest officials and veterinarians have stepped up vigil in this area.

A highly placed source shares that efforts are on to sanitise this area and the surrounding areas and preventive injection is being administered to cattle.
