12,000 Bengaluru cops will watch revelers tonight

When you are out on the streets to usher in the New Year on the morrow, about 12,000 cops, including women officers, will patrol the city to ensure it's a peaceful celebration. A large number of the khaki personnel will be posted in the central business district, the traditional hangout to ring in the New Year.

In recent times, upcoming party hubs like Indiranagar and Koramangala are attracting thousands of revellers. They, too, will come under khaki cover. To prevent untoward incidents, traffic police have decided to barricade flyovers in CBD. Checks against drunken driving will go on till 4 am on Sunday.

Police commissioner NS Megharikh said 30 platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and three battalions of City Armed Reserve will be deployed, particularly at sensitive and hypersensitive locations. Personnel from the Garuda force will patrol the entire city, especially on Saturday night. The bomb squad scoured prominent CBD areas on Friday evening.

Over 30 watch towers have been installed on MG Road and Brigade Road; a metal detector door will be placed at the Brigade Road entrance when revellers start thronging the area after 8 pm on Saturday. Traffic will not be allowed on the two roads after 5 pm, said additional commissioner of police (traffic) R Hitendra.

Security was stepped up at shopping malls, cinemas, pubs, bars and restaurants in CBD as over 500 police officers in plainclothes, including women cops from the Central Crime Branch and the Criminal Investigation Department, visited these establishments on Friday. "Many of them are equipped with spy cameras fitted in their shirts and wristwatches. The scanning will continue until Saturday midnight," said an officer.
