Tamil Ilakkiya Peravai of Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women organised Muthamizh Vizha 2017. As part of the programme a drama workshop has also been organised today.

Dr. K. Chitra, Principal, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women presided over the function. Bakiyam, Head of Department (HOD) of Tamil department welcomed the gathering. L. Ramraj, Professor of Tamil Department of PSG College of Arts and Science was the chief guest and he spoke on the art of acting.

In his address, he said “The modern theatre has emerged from the 'Koothu' a traditional art of Tamil Nadu. In the Sangam period women were acting in the koothu, but in the medieval period men who dressed like women performed the female characters. In the 19th century, women artists like Balambal and Balamani started to act in dramas. As per the words “Nadaka salaiyottha Natkala Saalaiyondru Undo Nikalththu” of Kavimani the stage dramas should treat people eyes. ears and thoughts and purify their thoughts” he said.

At end of the workshop, the students from the drama troupe presented a drama based on 'Koondhal Kanavugal' a drama by Thamizhachi Thangapandian. About 200 teachers and students participated in this workshop.
