What is common between the Father of our Nation, our Prime Minister and city-based engineer by profession and artist by passion, K S KamalaKannan? While Mahatma Gandhi, preached and practised the concept of having a clean mind in a clean body, Narendra Modi initiated the nation-wide Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (clean India mission) and Coimbatore-based KamalaKannan is hoping that he will find himself a place in the Guinness Book of Records with his unique piece of art that he has created using toothpicks, implementing the Swachh Bharat concept.

About 17 lakh toothpicks have been used to create this piece of art that stands 7.1 feet tall and measures 14.10 feet in width. Its creator worked for 33 days to complete this creation. R Nehru, Headmaster, Government High School, Kembanaickenpalayam, T Arunachalam, Headmaster, Government High School, Periyaputhur and M Thirumurthi, Headmaster, Government Middle School, Pachapalayam are testimony to his work.
The aim of this piece of art is to achieve the goals of the Swachh Bharat mission. Through a press release artist KamalaKannan says “The aim of creating this piece of art is to unite hands in the progress of India 2020 and to enter the Guinness Book of Records. Being an Indian, I like the motto of Mahatma Gandhi that a clean body cannot reside in an unclean city. This motto motivated me to contribute to the Swachh Bharat mission through my artistic sense.”
The artwork offers a fantastic peep into the mind and ideas of our freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their dreams of a vibrant and a progressive India. This artwork portrays our national flag as a background depicting the four major themes namely child labour, save water, say no to plastic and save trees.
KamalaKannan has in the past, emerged as a record holder of the Elite World Record for creating the largest seed mosaic of 272.94 sq cms in 10 hours using nine variants of grains.
