Mobile toilets becoming a health hassle

The central and the state governments are making efforts to make all the people in India have access to toilet facility. Subsidies are provided by the state and the central government for the construction of toilets. In Coimbatore, toilets were constructed in the multiple location in the city for people's convenience and were named called 'Namma Toilets'.

Due to the negligence and poor maintenance, many Namma Toilets are damaged and rendered useless. In spite of the poor condition of the toilets people were using these toilets. As the toilets were used again and again without being cleaned the toilets became a threat to the health of the users.

A few months back a mobile toilet was placed on the platform on the road adjacent to the Coimbatore General Hospital (GH).  The toilet was installed on the platform as there was no space along the road for installing the toilet, as vehicles were parked on both sides of the road in spite of this being declared a no parking zone.

This mobile toilet has become a threat to the people's health instead of being a help. The bad smell emanating from the toilet creates uneasiness to the pedestrians who use the pathway. Filled with contagious flies, it's undeniable a serious health hazard!

News about the poor sanitation conditions has been published frequently in the media. However, except a few officers no one was interested in rectifying the problems. ''Efforts to contact the concerned officials to report on the pathetic condition of the toilet went in vain. Over and over use of these disease-spreading toilets pose a serious threat to the public, either it should be cleaned and maintained in a sanitized state or else efforts should be made to remove the toilets once and for all from that place'. said an social activist.
