'Despite several pleas and petitions, we are still homeless', Nomadic people petition Collector.

Lashing themselves with hard ropes, a group of nomads, approached the District Collectorate, today seeking a home for their community people. 'A home, a safe place to dwell in peace' has been the long-time plea of these 20 nomadic people who currently live on the roadsides near Gandhipark in the city. 'Despite several pleas and petitions, we still are homeless', said the people.

It was indeed heart-wrenching to see these people including children whipping themselves and rigorously playing drums to show their wretched situation.

Over more than two decades, several generations of people from these families have made this road their home. In spite of unbearable mosquito bites, stray dogs, extreme climate conditions and hygiene issues these people are left with no option other than the road sides.

Despite making repeated requests for a home, nothing has been done in this regard by concerned authorities, they said. Today, a section of these people visited the District Collectorate and submitted their petition requesting for a home to stay. One of the petitioners stated that recently, a group of people who are involved in making hand-crafted products out of bamboo were provided with homes, so, why not to them?

Another petitioner alleged that they are unable to provide their children with education because they lack a home, a basic shelter. The protestors plead the district administration to provide them a home, so that at least their children could lead a better life.
