Battered IAF Road causes hardships to Avadi residents

The residents of Pattabhiram and Avadi are facing severe hardship because of the poor condition of the IAF Road, which is an important link to several residential localities including Bharathiyar Nagar and Uzhaipalar Nagar.

P. Jayakumar, secretary, Bharathiyar Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said the IAF Road maintained by the Defence establishment is in a very poor condition posing hardships to residents.

The road stretching for a length of 1.50 km has several important defence units and also schools and colleges. The road was black topped almost four years ago. It has worn out completely and is full of pot holes and craters.

The Bharathiyar Nagar Residents Welfare Association and Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Centre have given several representations to the Garrison Engineer (who is in-charge of maintaining the road), Prime Minister’s Office, Avadi MLA ‘Ma Foi’ K. Pandiarajan and the Avadi Municipality. Thousands of motorists use the road every day and they are put to immense trouble.

However, the residents’ plea to the Garrison Engineer to repair the road has not evoked any response.

T. Sadagopan, president of consumer association, wanted the Avadi Municipality to repair the road so that the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses would be re-routed on this road. He alleged the small buses operated by MTC has been diverted through alternative route citing the poor road condition.
