Tomato
According to the First Advance Estimate of National Horticulture Board (2018-19), the area under tomato is 8.14 lakh hectares with a production of 205.15 lakh tonnes. The major tomato growing states are Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and West Bengal. Tamil Nadu, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruppur, Theni and Dindigul districts are the major cultivation pockets for tomato. Tomato is grown throughout the year during all major seasons. Fresh arrivals have flooded the Coimbatore wholesale market from Natchipalyam, Madhampatti, Chettipalayam and Aalandurai. Arrivals from Tumkur in Karnataka have also commenced from October and will continue till December end.
Brinjal
According to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticultural Board (2018-19) the area and production of brinjal in India are expected to be around 7.35 lakh hectares and 129.87 lakh tonnes respectively. West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are major brinjal producing states in the country. Brinjal is grown in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts in Tamil Nadu. As per trade sources, current arrivals are coming from Natchipalayam, Kalampalayam and Poolampatti. Brinjal arrivals have begun from Mysore.
Bhendi
According to the First Advance Estimate of National Horticulture Board (2018-19), the area under bhendi is 5.11 lakh hectares with a production of 62.19 lakh tonnes during 2018-19. The major bhendi cultivating districts in Tamil Nadu are Salem, Theni, Dharmapuri, Thiruvallur, Coimbatore and Madurai. As per the trade sources, most of the current arrivals at the Coimbatore market are from Trichy, Thalaivasal, Vaikuntam, and Ottanchathiram.
The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), TNAU analyzed prices in the past 12 years of tomato, brinjal and bhendi that prevailed in Oddanchathiram, Trichy and Coimbatore Uzhavar Chanthai. As per the results of the analysis, the price of good quality tomato during harvest would be around Rs.18-20 per kg. Good quality of brinjal price will rule around Rs. 25-27 per kg and good quality of bhendi will be priced around Rs.20-22 per kg. Based on the onset of the northeast monsoon in the ensuing season, there will be very little fluctuations in vegetable prices. Hence, farmers are advised to take up sowing decisions accordingly.
