Impact in copra production due to continuous rains in Pollachi: Demand to increase base price Rs. 125

As copra production in Pollachi has been affected by the continuous rains, copra manufacturers have urged the central and state governments to increase the base price of copra to Rs 125.

Coimbatore: As copra production in Pollachi has been affected by the continuous rains, copra manufacturers have urged the central and state governments to increase the base price of copra to Rs 125. Copra production has been completely affected due to continuous rains in the last 20 days in the Pollachi area. There are more than 1500 copra fields in Pollachi, Udumalai, Anaimalai, Negamam and Kinathukadavu areas. In the dry field, the coconut is broken down and the copra is produced. Copra production resumed last month as the rains subsided. Now, the production of copra has been completely stopped due to continuous rains for the last 20 days.

Copra manufacturers said, '500 loads were brought daily to the dry fields in Pollachi and Udumalai taluk to produce copra. Copra production has been halted as the southwest monsoon continues. We have already piled up the broken coconut shells in a dryer and covered them with tarpaulin. Thus, the quality of that copra is reduced. The copra sells for Rs 95 to Rs 100 per kg.'

Due to the continuous rains, the copra trade was disrupted and thousands of local workers lost their jobs directly and indirectly. Also, the price of copra fluctuates every day. Therefore, the copra manufacturers said that the central and state governments should increase the base price of copra to Rs 125.
