The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Gaalaxy and the Idhayangal Charitable trust distributed welfare goodies including insulin pumps to 70 children with Type 1 Diabetes, at the Sitra Auditorium

Coimbatore: Insulin pumps and other medical equipment were provided to the children with Type 1 diabetes by the Rotary club and Idhayangal Charitable trust

The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Gaalaxy, the Idhayangal Charitable trust, Rotary International, New York Rotary together organized, a function that was held at 'SITRA' Auditorium on Avinashi Road. They distributed welfare items worth lakhs of rupees, including 'insulin pump' to 70 children suffering from type 1 diabetes, under a noble scheme called 'Project Madhuram'.

Rajasekhar Srinivasan, district governor of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Galaxy presided over the program. The founder president of the 'Idhayangal Trust' and a diabetes specialist, Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan said, that "The device is designed to help children keep the insulin levels required by the body balanced through a button system that can be induced to them without pain."

Apart from this, various medical aids including glucometers have been provided to help poor children suffering from diabetes. Under the 'Project Madhuram', 70 poor children were provided with medical assistance for two years with a financial assistance of about USD 80,000.

"There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Most people are more prone to type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a very dangerous disease", he added. Children in the age group of 1 to 18 years are more susceptible to this disease. Some of the symptoms of the disease include frequent urination, fatigue, poor eyesight and excessive appetite. Failure to diagnose and treat the disease early can lead to death in what can be termed as 'diabetic coma'.

Dr Krishnan stated that children suffering from this type of diabetes should take insulin and medicines for a lifetime. He started this Idhayangal Trust with the aim of providing free medical assistance to children from poor families who are suffering from this disease. The trust has been distributing the medical assistance kit to children all over Tamil Nadu. Adding that most children lack awareness that the insulin has to be store in the refrigerator, they use insulin that is stored outside, which has no effect. Inorder to overcome this, parents are being given awareness along with the children. the trust has also provided fridgesto parents and to the Coimbatore government hospital and poor families.

More than 10,000 children across Tamil Nadu have been affected by the disease. In Coimbatore district, up to 700 children are affected by the disease. Of these, 500 are from poor families. All of them are undergoing treatment at government and private hospitals in Coimbatore.

"On behalf of our foundation, we are taking steps to ensure that those poor children continue to get insulin and drug support. Those who are kind-hearted to help us in this noble work can contact our Trust at 9042858882, 8526421150. A poor child needs Rs 36,000 to provide insulin and medicine throughout the year. We are waiting for help in this effort to protect the welfare of our children", Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan said.

Rotary Club of Coimbatore Galaxy, President Karpagam Muthuraman, District Governor Rajasekhar Srinivasan, Rotary Future Governor Sundara Vadivelu, District Rotary Foundation Chairman Jayashankar and others were present on the occasion.
