S.P.Velumani Minister of Municipalities, Rural development and Special Schemes Implementation and Minister for School Education, Youth Welfare, and sports Ma. Pa. Padiyarajan have stated that the site for construction of the sports indoor stadium in the Coimbatore corporation limits has been chosen and this stadium will be constructed at a cost of Rs.3.50 crores with all the required infrastructure facilities. An inspection was conducted by the ministers at the site selected for the indoor stadium which is located near the Nehru Stadium yesterday.

When speaking the press minister Pandiarajan said, “Tamil Nadu government is giving emphasis for sports and creating world class infrastructure in all the districts for sports and encouraging sports persons. Rs.3.85 crores has been allocated to develop infrastructure for sports in Coimbatore and the land was selected for the construction of the stadium and an inspection was conducted today.”

“The officials have been instructed to speed up the process so that the works can be completed by the end of this year (2017). The new facility will have a swimming pool, volleyball court, tennis court, athletic arena, and many other facilities for indoor sports. A hostel will also be constructed for the athletes. The aim of the indoor stadium is to encourage students to participate in games and sports. People from Coimbatore district always participate in sports and this has to be encouraged.” he said.
He spoke to the athletes who are staying in the hostel at the Nehru stadium and advised the students. During this interaction, he informed the students “Rs.25000 is provided to the athletes so that they can qualify for the Olympics and win medals. The athletes should make use of this and be fit, and train well and should keep trying and should practice and win in Olympics.”

S.P. Velulmani minister for Municipalities, Rural development, and special schemes implementation when speaking to the students said, “The Tamil Nadu government has always given importance to the development of Coimbatore district and have implemented many projects as per the wish of the people of the city. Based on the permission, the funds were provided under the 110 rule in the assembly for the construction of the indoor stadium.”
“Following the orders the land was chosen and orders were provided for start the construction of the stadium. Orders have been provided to construct a new playground in Kovaipudur and one other area in the city. If the funds allocated are not sufficient for the construction of the indoor stadium more funds will be allocated” he said.
The ministers then visited the government museum and said that a new place has been chosen for the construction of a museum at a cost Rs.2 crores. This we are told is being done to educate the natives and visitors the history of Kongu region.
MLAs P.R.G Arun Kumar, V.C. Arukutti, Amman. K. Arjunan, Corporation assistant commissioner P.Gandhimathi, Senior Zonal Manager for sports Rajamahendran, Geethanajali, district sports officer Stanely P. Mathew and many others were present during the inspection.
