A Maruti car exploded in front of Ukkadam Kottai Easwaran Temple in Coimbatore early this morning. The body of the man in the car was charred to death.
Coimbatore: In a shocking incident, a man was killed when a cylinder exploded in a Maruti car near Kottai Easwaran Temple in Ukkadam Kottaimedu area of Coimbatore at around 4.30 am today
Senior officials, including Police Commissioner Balakrishnan and DIG Muthusamy, who rushed to investigate the incident, have camped at the spot and intensified the investigation.
A Maruti car exploded in front of Ukkadam Kottai Easwaran Temple in Coimbatore early this morning. The body of the man in the car was charred to death. On hearing the explosion, the public immediately informed the fire department and the police. The police rushed to the spot and evacuated the public from the spot and on the other hand, the fire department brought the fire under control.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the cylinder in the car exploded and the car broke into two. While the registration number of the car is at Pollachi address, it is learnt that Prabhakaran is the owner of the car.
Following the accident, all roads leading to Kottai Easwaran Koil Street have been blocked. Fingerprint experts, bomb disposal squad police and a sniffer dog have been called to the spot and an investigation is underway.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner K Balakrishnan said that the cylinder in the car exploded and the accident took place near the Kottai Easwaran temple and all angles are being investigated as it has happened near the Kottai Easwaran temple.
Commissioner Balakrishnan has also ordered an investigation with a total of six special squads - three special squads to examine CCTV footage in the area and three special squads in the area where the cylinder blast took place.
Top police officials and members of Hindu outfits and BJP leaders are expected to visit the spot.
There are a large number of cloth shops on Easwaran Koil Street where the gas exploded in the car and met with the accident.
With Deepavali around the corner tomorrow, people will gather in large numbers in these areas to buy new clothes.
As the police are investigating the spot, the delay in opening the shops has caused disappointment among the traders.
It is expected that the shops will be allowed to open only after the completion of the preliminary work of investigating by forensic experts.
Due to the accident which took place in the wee hours of the morning, a tense situation prevailed across Kottai Easwaran Street.
