The water of this dam exceeds the drinking water needs of the public and is widely used for agricultural irrigation. Similarly, the Parambikulam dam is also a source of water for dams including Aliyar.

Recently, the sluice gate of the Parambikulam dam became Fruited. This led to the risk of a large amount of water being wasted into the sea. In this situation, on the basis of complaints lodged by the public, the work of repairing the damaged sluice gate is going on on a war footing.

Subsequently, the incident of sluice failure was brought to the notice of the public by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and a sum of Rs.7.20 crores was allocated for the construction of a new shutter and a government order was issued.

The work is being carried out on war footing. Now, following that, the work of installing the shutter in the dam is in progress.
