2 tonnes of gutkha smuggled from Bengaluru to Coimbatore caught - Eight people, including an omni bus, arrested

2 tonnes of gutkha converting cash of Rs 20 lakh were seized and 8 people were arrested during a vehicle check on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore yesterday.


Coimbatore: A special squad has been formed on the orders of the district SP to check the sale of ganja and gutkha in Coimbatore district.

In this case, the Sulur Special Cell police conducted a vehicle checking near a private star hotel in Neelambur on Avinashi Road.

At that time, they stopped the omni bus and checked it. It was found that it contained around 500 kg of gutkha items.



The four arrested have been identified as Senthikumar (47), Meghaboo Pasha (30), Senthilraja (44) and Jayaprakash (39).

They also seized an omni bus and a car and an auto rickshaw that had come to buy gutka.

On the basis of their interrogation, the police went to Mayilampatti village and conducted a raid and arrested four persons — Bharat Patel (26), Amararam (22), Gopal (22) and Maipal (22), all residents of Rajasthan, who had rented a room there and stored gutka there.

They also seized around 1.5 tonnes of gutkha items and a car, two-wheelers and Rs 20 lakh in cash.



All the eight arrested were produced in court by the Special Cell police and sent to jail.

Earlier, district SP Badrinarayanan personally visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.

He also praised the cops for their excellent work by seizing 2 tonnes of gutkha and vehicles, Rs 20 lakh in cash and arresting eight persons.
