The collector had sought a total allocation of Rs 904 crore for land acquisition, which includes Rs 789.10 crore as proposed compensation and Rs 114.42 crore as amount for administrative expenses.

In addition, a separate district revenue officer's office will be set up to carry out the land acquisition and 202 posts of Tahsildar, Revenue Inspector and Assistant will be set up.

A total of 202 officers and employees will be engaged till December 2023.

Accepting the proposal of the Coimbatore District Collector and the recommendation of the Commissioner of Land Administration, the Government of Tamil Nadu has accorded administrative sanction for acquiring 3731 acres of land in six panchayats in Annur and Mettupalayam taluks and acquiring land for setting up an industrial park.

Annur's prosperity will take a leap

Coimbatore, also known as the Manchester of South India, is known for its small and medium scale industries and it is highly expected that the Annur Industrial Park will add further strength to the industry of Coimbatore and attract new investors.

Since the industrial estate is close to rural areas, there are expectations that many people from rural and urban educated graduates to the common man will get employment opportunities.

According to reports, the Annur Industrial Park will be built with international technology and the Coimbatore industry, which is already planning to increase the use of robots, is likely to set up industrial sheds with modern facilities at Annur Sipcot.

Industry sources said the focus of large investors internationally will shift towards SIPCOT through modern technology.

Farmers' protest: Appeal to Tamil Nadu government

Farmers have been protesting against the acquisition of large tracts of agricultural land covering villages as the industrial park will be set up in areas falling under six panchayats, including Annur and Mettupalayam. Since the compensation given by the government for the land will not be enough, they have demanded that the government abandon the project after understanding the opposition of the farmers.

In particular, the politically non-aligned farmers' unions have been strongly opposed to the setting up of the industrial park and are holding meetings to discuss the next course of action.

Despite all of these oppositions, if the right compensation is given to land owners, along with the upcoming 96-km highway from Annur to Hasanur, these projects are set to be a game changer for this mostly rural area.
