Strict action against violators of traffic rules in Coimbatore; Rs. 13.50 lakh collected as fine in one week

In the past one week, 1,349 people in Coimbatore city were slapped with fines amounting to Rs. 13,000 in lieu of the TN Government's recent order to increase fine amount to reduce road accidents.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Government recently issued an order increasing the fine amount for traffic violations to prevent loss of lives due to the road accidents that have been on the rise in the State. Hence, the fine amount on road violations was increased to make motor vehicle laws stricter.

Accordingly, the new penalty amount for road violations came into effect from October 21 to reduce the number of accidents caused by all vehicles including two-wheelers, cars, vans, lorries and autos.

Hence, the traffic police are engaged in intensive vehicle checking and surveillance across Coimbatore city. Action is being taken against motorists who have violated the rules at signals on major roads.

A case is registered on the basis of 30 types of violations. A fine of Rs. 1,000 has been imposed for various offences including over-speeding, drunken driving, causing an accident, ignoring the signal, driving on a one-way road, three people sitting on a motorcycle, driving without a driving license, etc.

A fine of Rs.1,000 will be imposed for riding without a helmet on two-wheelers, Rs. 1,000 for driving without a seat belt and Rs. 500 for violating any signal. As many as 1,349 people have been fined totalling to Rs.13 lakh for violating traffic rules. In the last week alone, a fine of Rs 13.49 lakh has been collected in Coimbatore city.

As per the new penal procedures, a fine of Rs. 20,000 will be levied on goods vehicles carrying more than the permissible limit and Rs. 2,000 each will be fined for each tonne.

According to the traffic police, various measures have been taken to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents in Coimbatore city. The police opined that accidents will be reduced if only the public followed traffic rules while driving vehicles which could prevent loss of lives.

Strict action will continue against motorists violating traffic rules. Violators will be informed about the fine amount and will need to pay it immediately or through a court of law to absolve them of any criminal proceedings.
