CCMC Commissioner inspects canal desilting works in Lanka Corner area

Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, M Prathap who inspected the desilting works in the Lanka Corner area stated that a team of experts from Chennai will inspect the rain-affected areas under Coimbatore Corporation.

Coimbatore: With the Northeast monsoon intensifying, desilting of canals is being carried out in Coimbatore city to avoid waterlogging in the tunnels.

Five committees have been constituted for this purpose. In this situation, desilting of waste sludge from the storm water drain in the highly vulnerable Lanka Corner area is in progress. Two teams were formed for this purpose and the work was intensified.

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, M Prathap personally inspected the works. Following this, he directed the officials to complete the work at the earliest.

Speaking to the media, the CCMC Commissioner M Prathap clarified, "All the Departments of the Corporation are coordinating and working together. Due to the initiative taken by the Corporation in the last two months, about 270 km of canals have been desilted by the Corporation. As a result, most of the low-lying areas have not been waterlogged even in the current rains. Only 1 ft of water accumulated in the Lanka Corner, Kikani tunnel in particular, and that too was removed by a high-capacity motor. There was some waterlogging in the Lanka Corner area alone."

"Following this, Minister Senthil Balaji, the Coimbatore Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar and officials inspected the situation and steps were taken to ensure that there was no stagnation. Efforts to ensure that there was no stagnation in the storm water drain due to rainwater and not allowing it to enter the tunnel and locations where the water course should be constructed were also discussed. A team of experts from the Chennai Corporation will arrive this evening to inspect the situation. Since it is the rainy season now, the drain has been completely desilted as a temporary measure. After the rains cease, the Chief Minister's approval will be obtained and work will be carried out as per the decision of the expert committee. In Kurinji Nagar area, 90 percent of the areas where the rainwater had accumulated are areas where the Corporation has not obtained permission. A total of 16 feet has been allotted for the Rajavaikkal route. They have been completely occupied. Steps will be taken to remove the encroachments on the waterway in the Corporation area," reiterated the CCMC Commissioner.
