In lieu of anti-caste activist Segudanthali Murugesan's death anniversary on November 17, all liquor shops in Karumathampatti area are to down shutters, with warning of strict action against violators.
Coimbatore: Murugesan, an anti-caste activist, who hailed from Segudanthali near Somanur in Coimbatore district was murdered on November 17, 1999. Every year on November 17, tributes are paid to him along with liquor shops and bars operating in the area downing shutters for a day, to commemorate his death anniversary.
Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation has announced a holiday for liquor shops operating in Karumathampatti area on November 17 on the occasion of Segudanthali Murugesan's death anniversary. In a circular issued on behalf of the Coimbatore South District Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, it is stated that "Government liquor retail outlets operating in Karumathampatti area are declaring a one-day holiday (17.11.2022) for 2261, 2270, 1975, 2306, 1821, 1736, 2272 and allied bars functioning in Karumathampatti area.
Strict action will be taken against shops, employees and liquor licensees who violate the order."
