The Young Indians (Yi) Coimbatore Chapter organized a 'Backathon' in the city which witnessed 1000 students from nine colleges of the city highlighting the importance of child-safety.
Coimbatore: Young Indians (Yi) Coimbatore Chapter organized a 'Backathon' in the city which witnessed 1000 students from 9 colleges of the city highlighting the importance of child-safety.
The backathon was flagged off by the District Collector of Coimbatore, Dr. G S Sameeran near the VOC Park Gate, in the presence of Yi's Coimbatore Chapter Chair, Shrikumarvelu and Yi’s Masoom Project Chairperson, Rajalakshmi Vishnu and members of the organization.
1000 people walked backward to symbolise "going back to our innocent childhood" in order to highlight the importance of child safety in our society.
The participants were from Sri Krishna Institutions, EASA College of Engineering and Technology, Karpagam College of Engineering, KG College of Health Sciences, KPR College of Arts, Science and Research, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, RVS College of Arts and Science and Suguna Institutions to name a few.
The participants belonged to Yi’s YUVA Clubs that were launched in their respective colleges.
Speaking at the event, Dr. G S Sameeran said, "Take this message of child safety to everyone; to your neighbourhood and to this entire district. You are all the messengers of child-safety. I appreciate the efforts taken by Young Indians, the colleges and students.â€
Earlier, addressing the gathering, the Young Indians’ representatives said, “You have to be responsible persons to make right choices, and you also need to be socially responsible so that you can do something good to others around you. You do not need to have money or be in a powerful position to bring a change in a child’s life. You need to just think right, and act right.†They urged the people to intervene when a child is traumatized or shows signs of abuse by dialling 1098.
For 8-9 years, Yi's Coimbatore Chapter has stressed the message of Child Safety through its project called Masoom (meaning 'Innocence' in Hindi). Under this project, Yi has conducted awareness programs in schools, colleges and among the public, and has created awareness about child safety also among auto drivers, taxi drivers, bus drivers and conductors. Guidance has also been provided to children about 'Safe Touch and Unsafe Touch,' while also educating parents whose children are victims of sexual abuse about the steps they need to take after the trauma.
