Claiming that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department was taking over lands in Coimbatore which were gifted free, the Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association staged a protest at the office of the Endowments Department.
Coimbatore: Lands belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department were gifted free to the farmers and the title deeds were issued to them. Meanwhile, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department is said to be acquiring those lands.
Protesting against this, the Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association and the Farmers' Movement staged a protest at the office of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at Balasundaram Road in Coimbatore.
They alleged that the Tamil Nadu Government had enacted the gifted free Abolition Act, 1963 and issued title deeds to the farmers who have been ploughing those lands and yet the temple authorities are trying to acquire their lands. The farmers were reportedly receiving illegal notices from the temple authorities calling them encroachers.
The farmers thus protested that it was the Endowments Department that was trying to encroach upon their lands and this ought to be stopped immediately.
