Over 500 people detained by police in Coimbatore for protesting over bifurcation of CSI Diocese

More than 500 people were arrested in Coimbatore for defying prohibitory orders and protesting in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's office against the bifurcation of the CSI Diocese.


Coimbatore: Several churches and schools function under the Church of South India (CSI) Diocese in The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Salem and districts.

The Coimbatore region which has nearly five lakh members will now be bifurcated under the Salem Diocese. CSI has about 50 pastoral assemblies in Erode and Tirupur taluks, and it was informed that the archbishop was going to split the zone without hearing or heeding the views of the people.



More than 500 people from Erode were arrested by the police when they tried to stage a protest in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's office. There was commotion in the area for some time since the protest was done in defiance of prohibitory orders.
