Udumalai Uzhavar santhai - Sale of vegetables and fruits worth Rs 2.24 crore in January

As many as 90,091 people have purchased 8,36,955 kg of vegetables and fruits brought by 2,374 farmers to the Udumalai Uzhavar santhai in January.


Tirupur: Uzhavar Santhai is being implemented by the Department of Agricultural Marketing, Government of Tamil Nadu so that the farmers can sell their vegetables directly to the public with a view to ensure that they get remunerative price for their produce.



As the harvested vegetables and fruits reach the public instantly, people are eagerly coming in search of Uzhavar santhai. Farmers from Udumalai, Madathukulam and Gudimangalam blocks are selling their produce at the farmers' market on Kapurkhan Road in Udumalpet.

The farmers' market, which starts functioning early in the morning, is a convenient hub for many to buy vegetables, greens and fruits during walking.

As many as 90,091 people have purchased 8,36,955 kg of vegetables and fruits brought by 2,374 farmers to the Udumalai Uzhavar santhai in January. On an average, 3,000 people per day have used the farmers' market.



The total value of vegetables and fruits sold is Rs 2,24,36,825. This is an increase of Rs 33,98,700 over the previous month of December. In December last year, 2,215 farmers had brought 7,57,905 kg of vegetables worth Rs 1,90,38,755. It was purchased by 84,215 people and benefitted.

The inflow of vegetables has increased in the last month and the arrival of the public has also increased considerably. At the same time, the farmers are expecting a higher price for vegetables, including tomatoes.



According to the farmers' market, tomatoes were sold at a maximum price of Rs 24 per kg, brinjal at Rs 18, pudalangai at Rs 20, beer at Rs 35, bitter gourd at Rs 40, radish at Rs 18, chilli at Rs 30, small onion at Rs 50, big onion at Rs 26 and drumstick at Rs 70. The arrival of okra was low and it was being sold at a maximum of Rs 40 to a maximum of Rs 55 per kg.

As the footfall of the public to Udumalai Uzhavar santhai is increasing day by day, there is a demand that the district administration should take steps to improve the basic amenities including parking in the market premises.
