Protesting sanitary worker at CMCH suffers from sudden epileptic attack

Sanitary workers were protesting on the second consecutive day at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital campus demanding a pay hike when Mary, a worker who was also involved in the protest, had an epileptic attack.

Coimbatore: Contract sanitation workers at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) are on a sit-in protest for the second consecutive day, today.

More than 100 contract sanitation workers who are working at CMCH are paid a salary of Rs.412 per day. A few months ago, the workers protested demanding a salary hike. Former District Collector, G S Sameeran had then announced that talks would be held with the workers and assured them that their salary would be Rs. 721 per day thereon.

The contract sanitation workers then called off the strike and returned to work.

However, more than 80 contract sanitation workers staged a sit-in inside the hospital premises on Thursday alleging that the amount had not been paid for several months.

The strike was not called off despite talks between the Dean of CMCH and the contract company.

For the second consecutive day on Friday, contract sanitation workers at CMCH staged a sit-in protest in the hospital premises.

Since the protest continued through the night, Mary, a sanitation worker from Sundarapuram who was involved in the protest, suddenly had an epileptic attack and started writhing.

Fellow sanitation workers rushed Mary into CMCH for immediate medical aid.

Tension prevailed in the CMCH campus due to the incident.
