The residents of Gandhinagar area in Coimbatore district knelt down at the Collector's office and submitted a memorandum demanding that the money for the alternate land promised as compensation for their land which was acquired for the expansion work of Coimbatore airport be given immediately as per today's rates for land.
Coimbatore: Ever since the district administration under the previous AIADMK regime in Coimbatore acquired the lands of the people of Gandhinagar area for the expansion of the runway at Coimbatore airport, it was announced that those land owners will be duly compensated with an amount for the purchase of an alternative site.
But residents of Gandhinagar area have submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector's office stating, "Our land was taken over by the previous rulers at a low cost for the expansion work of the Coimbatore airport. The promised amount of money or alternative land at the time of acquiring the land has not yet been given. While acquiring the land today, they are not paying compensation as of today but only the compensation that they had agreed to pay seven years ago, which is not acceptable in the present economic situation."
In their petition, the residents of Gandhinagar area have also alleged that authorities have demanded that they should vacate their houses where they are currently staying in. "We are unable to construct a house at an alternate site with the compensation given by them and we should be allowed to stay here for another six months," they added.
Earlier, the publicwho had arrived at the Collectorate to submit a petition, knelt in front of the District Collector's office and urged authorities to grant them their demands.
