‘Mango Showers’ to hit TN as pre-monsoon season begins: Tamilnadu Weatherman

Pre-monsoon weather activity including Mango Showers is expected across Tamil Nadu as temperatures rise in April–May, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall ahead of the southwest monsoon.

Coimbatore:

With temperatures rising across India, the pre-monsoon season has set in, bringing dynamic weather activity including thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, according to weather observers.

One of the key phenomena expected during this period is “Mango Showers,” which typically occur across parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. These showers are considered crucial for mango cultivation and are caused by a line of wind discontinuity, where easterly and westerly winds interact, triggering intense thunderstorms.

Weather experts note that these showers can bring heavy rainfall ranging from 50 mm to over 100 mm in isolated areas and may sometimes be accompanied by hailstorms, locally referred to as “Alangankatti Mazhai.” Interior and southern parts of Tamil Nadu are among the regions likely to witness such activity.

The pre-monsoon season, spanning April and May, is characterised by unstable atmospheric conditions, often leading to sudden weather changes. Apart from Mango Showers, other regional weather patterns across India include coffee showers in the Western Ghats, dust storms in North India, heatwave “Loo” winds in the northwest and severe thunderstorms in eastern and northeastern regions.

Meteorologists highlight that these seasonal weather systems play a vital role in agriculture, groundwater recharge and preparing the atmosphere for the southwest monsoon.

However, authorities have also cautioned that thunderstorms during this period can be hazardous due to lightning, strong winds and occasional hail. People are advised to stay indoors during storms, avoid open areas and trees, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

The pre-monsoon phase is expected to continue over the coming weeks, with intermittent rainfall and thunderstorm activity likely across parts of Tamil Nadu.
