City Auto drivers stage protest, demanding to ban ‘Rapido’ bike-taxi service

The protesting auto-rickshaw drivers noted that there have been frequent quarrels reported between them and Rapido drivers due to rising conflict and competition.


Coimbatore: City Auto drivers staged a protest in front of the City Police Commissioner's Office urging to impose a ban on ‘Rapido’ a bike-taxi aggregator in the city.



The protesting auto-rickshaw drivers alleged that there have been frequent quarrels reported between them and Rapido drivers due to rising conflict and competition.



“In this regard, one of the auto drivers was remanded for involvement in a clash with one of the Rapido drivers in the in recent months,” the protesting auto drivers said.

The protesting auto drivers also said "According to the Motor vehicles Act, using bikes for commercial mobility is an offense. States like Karnataka and Maharashtra have completely banned such aggregators. We also request the Tamil Nadu government take prompt action to ban these companies which are threatening our survival. In recent days, these services have impacted the income of the city auto drivers”.



"Our family's necessities including educating our children have now become a challenge due to the low income due to Rapido service across the district." They alleged.
