Coimbatore: Hallmarking unique identification (HUID) numbers will be mandatory for gold jewellery from April 1.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced hallmarking unique identification number system for gold jewellery and artefacts in gold. It will have a unique code for each piece of jewellery. This procedure has been made mandatory from April 1.

Gopinath, senior director, BIS Coimbatore, told reporters, “Hallmarking with three symbols namely BIS, logo, purity of jewellery hallmarking hallmarking unique 6 digit identification number has been made mandatory for all gold jewellery. The practice will come into effect across the country from tomorrow (April 1).
Consumers must look at this while buying jewellery. Jewellery that does not have this code should not be sold. If there is any old unsold jewellery in the jewellery shops, they need to be re-registered.
If BIS, registered jewellers, vendors sell without this unique identification number, their registration will be cancelled.
Export jewellery, jewellery less than 2 grams, exhibition, jewellery offered to encourage sales, those selling less than Rs 40 lakh per annum, Gold for medical use is exempted from affixing this stamp.
BIS, unregistered jewellers are not allowed to sell either hallmarked jewellery or non-hallmarked gold jewellery with HUID number. Legal action will be taken in case of violation. This is what he said.
