Corporation Commissioner Prathap inaugurated the workshop namely “Urban Lab”, here on Monday.

Coimbatore: A workshop for Solid Waste Management under Sustainable Urban Development – Smart Cities (SUD-SC) in collaboration with German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) was organized in the city.

Corporation Commissioner Prathap inaugurated the workshop titled “Urban Lab”, here on Monday.

Later speaking to reporters he said “ A training camp called Urban Lab is being organized to train corporation staff, to effectively implement solid waste management under the SUDSC-II project in collaboration German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

“While the urban infrastructure development is being augmented on all fronts, solid waste management is one of the mainstays of the smart cities mission. There are huge challenges in disposing of solid waste in the city due to the huge generation of solid waste. Similarly, there is a shortage of land to store the garbage” he said.

“The amount of garbage collected daily in the areas under Coimbatore Corporation is 1200 to 1300 tonnes. Of these, only 500 to 600 tonnes of garbage is processed now” he said

“Moreover, there is a feeling among the public which is called NIMBY Syndrome (Not in My Back Yard), by which they complain about garbage dumps near residential areas or houses. As a result, the public is protesting against the garbage collection sites set up in the city” he said.

“While 17 lakh cubic metres of garbage has been collected at Vellalore garbage depot out of which nine lakh cubic metres of garbage has been disposed of properly. We are planning to set up a bio-forest in Vellalore garbage dump in the next three months and aim to achieve a garbage-free situation in the area soon” the Commissioner said.

“Similarly, reports have been sent to the Government for approval for establishing CNG plant and MRF plant projects. In the City Corporation, over 80% of the garbage collected from the public has been processed” he said and added “Over 3 to 5 tonnes of biodegradable waste has been segregated and used in micro composting centres” he said.

“To monitor the effective implementation of solid waste management, a biometric system will be implemented to record the daily attendance twice for municipal sanitation workers. The vehicles collecting garbage are fitted with GPS devices and their activities are being monitored” he said.

“Similarly, micro composting centres will be equipped with a mobile application to digitally monitor the weight of biodegradable wastes” Prathap added.

Corporation Deputy Commissioner Sharmila, Executive Engineer Murugesan, Assistant Executive Engineer Bhuvaneswari, (GIZ) Project Director Theresa Korber, Regional Health Officers and Health Inspectors took part in the workshop.
