Coimbatore: Edappadi K Palaniswami has been officially recognized as the General Secretary of AIADMK by the Election Commission of India and with this development, the official two leaves symbol has been allotted to the party to contest in Karnataka Assembly elections.
A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court on behalf of Edappadi K Palaniswami seeking a direction to the Election Commission to recognise him as the General Secretary of the AIADMK and approve the amendments made in the party rules.
EPS also demanded that the AIADMK be allowed to contest the Karnataka assembly elections and sought the two leaves symbol.
On April 12, the High Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take a decision within 10 days and issue a notification. As the deadline given by the Delhi High Court ends tomorrow, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Commissioners Anoop Chandra Pandey, Arun Goel and other top officials held a meeting on Edappadi K Palaniswami's demand.
Following this, the Election Commission today recognised Edappadi K Palaniswami as the general secretary of the AIADMK.
In a statement issued by the Election Commission in this regard, "The AIADMK, which is a recognized state party in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, has been allotted the two leaves symbol to contest elections â€.
In this situation, the AIADMK has made a request to allot the 'two leaves symbol to the candidates contesting on behalf of their party in the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka subject to the provisions of the law. Accepting this, the Election Commission has decided to allot the 'two leaves symbol to the candidates contesting the elections on behalf of the AIADMK in Karnataka. Election officials have also been informed in this regard.
The report of the Election Commission will also be sent to the AIADMK general secretary.
However, the ECI decision is subject to the final verdict of the courts as per the notification.
