Migrant worker injured in leopard attack near Valparai

Anil Oraon, who was given first aid treatment after he sustained serious injuries in his leg and fractured his leg, was referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further treatment.



Coimbatore: In the second such attack in two days, Anil Oraon, a labourer from the northern state, was injured when a leopard attacked him at Sirukunda Estate near Valparai. He is undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore.

The movement of wildlife is on the rise in the estate areas around Valparai in Coimbatore district. People are in constant fear and are facing the worst of man-animal conflict in recent years.

In this situation, a woman worker from the northern state was attacked by a leopard in the 35th tea garden area of Sirukundra Estate in Valparai yesterday, and she escaped with minor injuries.

In the second such attack, Anil Oraon (26), a migrant labourer from North India, was working in the same 35th estate today. A leopard which was hiding in the garden pounced on him and attacked him leaving him seriously injured.



Valparai Municipal Chairman Azhagu Sundaravalli, who had gone to inspect the area, rescued the attacker, put him in his vehicle and admitted him to Valparai government hospital for treatment.

According to sources, more cattle reared in Valparai area are released for grazing in the tea estates areas such as the Koozhangal river near Valparai and Sirukundra Nalla Kathu.

Even as leopards hunt down these cows, they return to eat the carcass and take on he estate workers who are engaged in work.
