Tirupur: In a shocking incident, a group of tipplers broke the front windshield of an ATM centre on Pasupathi Road near Udumalpet.

The Udumalpet branch of Coimbatore District Central Cooperative Bank is situated at Pasupathi Road in Udumalpet in Tirupur district. More than 500 people have accounts in the branch and a large number of customers come and go to get jewellery loans, crop loans and transactions.

Yesterday, the officials closed the bank as usual. When they came to open this morning, the atm in front of the bank was found to be broken by the glass of the centre.

A TASMAC liquor shop is functioning on Pasupathy Road opposite the bank. It has become a haven for drug addicts as the sale of liquor is going on illegally even at night. The prevalence of drug abuse has increased to such an extent that school children, girls and the general public cannot come and go.

The government should change the location of the liquor shop. The public has been demanding this for many years. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the miscreants threw away empty liquor bottles and broke the glass of the ATM centre.

Based on a complaint lodged by the bank officials, the police are investigating the matter using the footage captured on cctv cameras.

At present, due to an attempt to break the glass of the ATM centre and steal it, an unsafe environment has arisen. Social activists have been demanding that the authorities take steps to shift the TASMAC liquor shop in the area immediately.
