There is no ban on Jallikattu - Supreme Court verdict

The documents submitted by the Government of Tamil Nadu regarding jallikattu are satisfactory. The court cannot intervene with jallikattu after declaring it to be a part of the culture. The TamilNadu government's amendment does not violate fundamental rights. Supreme Court judges said it was created in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Coimbatore: On the festival of Thai Pongal, the heroic Tamil sport of jallikattu is practised in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Madurai.

Jallikattu, a traditional sport, will be held first in the Alanganallur, Avaniyapuram, and Palamedu areas of Madurai district. Subsequently, it is customary in various districts of TamilNadu to be held during temple festivals.

The public spontaneously protested at the Marina beach against the court's ban on the world famous Jallikattu event. Following this, the Tamil Nadu government brought an ordinance to provide for the conduct of Jallikattu.

Following this, organisations like the Animal Welfare Board and PETA petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the Tamil Nadu government's judgement allowing Jallikattu to be held.

On November 23, last year, a constitution bench led by Justice K M Joseph heard the petitions.

The bench of judges, which heard the arguments of all the parties, pronounced the verdict today. "There is no ban on conducting Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. We are satisfied with the documents

submitted by the Government of Tamil Nadu regarding jallikattu competitions. The court cannot interfere with jallikattu after declaring it to be a part of the culture. The Tamil Nadu government's

amendment does not violate fundamental rights. It has been created in accordance with the provisions of the law. This is stated in the judgment.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, Vaiko and O Panneerselvam have welcomed the verdict in the Jallikattu case.

Edappadi K Palaniswami, Leader of the Opposition:

I am happy that today, through various legal measures taken by the AIADMK government, the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has upheld the Tamil Nadu government's law allowing jallikattu to be held in Tamil Nadu.

"While the Assembly has declared that Jallikattu is a part of Tamil Nadu's cultural heritage, the judiciary cannot take a different view," he said, adding that the AIADMK welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to endorse the pro-Jallikattu laws passed in the Assembly during the AIADMK era.

Aiadmk minister Vijayabaskar met union ministers in person and urged them several times to get permission for jallikattu, our cultural symbol. I would like to express my gratitude to all the people of Tamil Nadu who have stood by all the legal battles taken by the AIADMK even after the DMK rule by including itself as a petitioner.

O Panneerselvam, former Chief Minister:

In 2017, there was a massive protest in Tamil Nadu in support of jallikattu. With the full cooperation of the Prime Minister, quick and decisive action was taken during the all-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Ordinance was promulgated in 2017 and made into law after obtaining the assent of the President.

Subsequently, a bill to this effect was passed in the Legislative Assembly and made into law. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is credited with upholding the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu. "I would like to thank Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving me the opportunity to propose the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Bill, 2017 as Chief Minister. This verdict is a victory for the culture and culture of Tamil Nadu. I dedicate this to the people of Tamil Nadu.

Vaiko, MDMK general secretary:

"Jallikattu cannot be banned," a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court said unanimously. The Tamil Nadu government's Jallikattu law will remain in effect." This Supreme Court decision is both significant and welcome. Tamil Nadu's cultural heritage has been established as a result of this.
