The Vande Bharat Express: 3 Months of Connecting Chennai and Coimbatore

The Vande Bharat Express from Coimbatore to Chennai is the third fastest train in the country, capable of covering a distance of 500 km in less than six hours at top speed of 130 kmph and an average speed of more than 90 kms per hour. It was the first Vande Bharat Express to be operated inside the State and second to be operated from Chennai after the Chennai - Mysuru Vande Bharat Express.


Coimbatore: It's been three months since the Vande Bharat Express from Chennai to Coimbatore was flagged off from MGR Chennai Central Railway Station in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Today, the Coimbatore-Chennai Vande Bharat express is the third fastest train in the country, covering a distance of nearly 500 kilometres in less than six hours at a top speed of 130 kilometres per hour and an average speed of more than 90 kilometres per hour. This was the first VBE to operate within the state and the second Vande Bharat Express train to depart from Chennai after the Chennai-Mysore Vande Bharat Express.

Except for Wednesdays, Southern Railway runs the high-speed Vande Bharat express train between Coimbatore and Chennai. This train in the last three months has been fully occupied and the tickets in both the classes are completely sold until 14th June 2023.

The people of Coimbatore region are expecting a Vande Bharat train service to Bangalore, Trivandrum and Mangalore. One more train departing Chennai in the morning to Coimbatore will also be well patronized.

Track speed enhancement work is in progress from Jolarpettai to Coimbatore, a distance of 280 kilometres. Few parts of it, especially the Cauvery river bridge in Erode was also inspected by the General Manager of Southern Railways last month.

The maximum speed limit will be increased from 110 kmph to 130 kmph once this work is completed and deemed fit for speed enhancement. It might reduce the travel time between Coimbatore and Chennai to five hours and thirty minutes.

Following will be train fare: Vande Bharat Express fare: Train No. 20643 from Chennai to Coimbatore. AC Chair Car - 1365 incl. 308 as catering charges which is optional. Executive Class - 2485 including 369 in catering charges.

Train No. 20644 from Coimbatore to Chennai. AC Chair Car - 1215 incl. 157 as catering charges. Executive Cass - 2310 incl. 190 as catering charge.
