The Coimbatore district administration has taken action to ensure the public have access to affordable tomatoes by holding discussions between the horticulture and agri-business departments. Following this, steps have been taken to sell tomatoes at lower prices in six uzhavar santhai, located in R S Puram, Singanallur, Vadavalli, Mettupalayam, Sundarapuram and Pollachi.
Coimbatore: In a statement issued by the district administration, In Coimbatore district, the officials of horticulture department and agri-business department held discussions to increase the supply of tomatoes through horticulture and hill crops department as tomatoes are being sold at higher prices in open markets and free supply of tomatoes to the public through farmers markets.
Following this, steps have been taken to sell tomatoes at lower prices in R S Puram, Singanallur, Vadavalli, Mettupalayam, Sundarapuram and Pollachi uzhavar santhai.
Based on this, they procured tomatoes from farmers and sold them to consumers at the farmers' markets for Rs. 80 per kg through the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Development Agency.
Further steps will be taken to increase the supply of tomatoes in the coming days and to procure tomatoes through the Horticulture Department and The Department of Agri-Business and sell them in the farmers' markets at a price lower than the market price.
