Many schools yet to install alcometers, say police

In the wake of yet another arrest of a school bus driver in Basavanagudi police limits, it has come to light that many schools are yet to follow the Bengaluru traffic police advisory to install alcometers.

On Thursday morning, the Basavanagudi police arrested Dharmendra, 35, on the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol when ferrying six children to school.

Even as senior traffic police officers say that the drive to keep a check on school bus drivers will continue, they said that the schools, too, have a role to play in ensuring safety of the children.

“More than six months ago, we issued an advisory to schools asking them to install alcometers. This way, they could check if the driver was inebriated when he came to take the bus in the morning and when he returned with the children,” said R. Hitendra, Additional commissioner of Police (Traffic).

However, traffic police officers claim that many schools have not installed alcometers.

“It’s just an advisory. It is up to the Education Department to conduct checks and ensure that the equipment is fixed in all schools,” said a traffic police officer.

Basavanagudi traffic police inspector Veejikumar said the school authorities have to conduct background checks of drivers before appointing them.

School Education Department officials said they would inspect school premises from Friday to check if alcometers had been installed.
