Farmer Assaulted After Exposing Corruption in Jal Jeevan Scheme in Coimbatore; Protests Demand Action

In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, farmers protest after a local farmer, Ramesh, was attacked for questioning corruption in the Jal Jeevan Mission project. They demand immediate police action against the perpetrators and an official inquiry.

In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, a group of farmers and social activists staged a protest demanding immediate police action against the individuals responsible for assaulting a farmer who raised questions about alleged irregularities. The incident occurred during a village council meeting in the Arasur Panchayat near Sulur, where the farmer, named Ramesh, questioned the legitimacy of water pipe connections provided under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

On October 2, during the village council meeting, supporters of the ruling DMK party reportedly attacked Ramesh after he raised these concerns. A complaint was filed at the Sulur Police Station by the aggrieved party.

Farmers and social activists gathered in front of the Sulur Panchayat office to condemn the attack on Ramesh and demanded that the police take action against the DMK supporters involved. They also called for an administrative inquiry into the continuous corruption within the Arasur Panchayat.

Ramesh, in an interview with journalists, alleged that there has been around 30 crore rupees worth of corruption and financial misdealings within the Arasur Panchayat over the past 15 years. He claimed that the Panchayat Secretary, Ganeshan Murthy, who has been in office for 10 years, is involved in illegal financial transactions amounting to approximately 3.30 crore rupees withdrawn in his name from the bank. Ramesh disclosed that he obtained this information through the Right to Information Act.

The situation escalated when Ramesh attended the village council meeting and was violently attacked by supporters of the Panchayat leader for questioning the council, leading to his hospitalization as an inpatient for treatment. The protestors are adamant that not only the perpetrators of the assault but also the ongoing corruption be addressed by the authorities.
