Coimbatore to host 31st Federation Cup National Basketball Championship

The Basketball Federation of India has assigned Tamil Nadu Basketball Association (TNBA) to conduct the 31st Federation Cup National Basketball Championship for men and women. This tournament is scheduled to be hosted from 22 to 26 March at the PSH Tech Indoor Sports Complex, Coimbatore.



This tournament is sponsored by Arise Foundation, an organization that has been actively involved in conducting national championship events across India in basketball for the last few years. Arise Foundation was founded by Aadhav Arjuna and we are told that this tournament is funded entirely by this foundation.

Ahead of this tournament, D Parventhan, Secretary in-charge TNBA, D R Balan, Coordinator, TNBA and T Palaniswamy, Secretary, PSG Sports addressed the media. This is the 3rd time that this championship is hosted in Tamil Nadu and this is the 1st time that Coimbatore is playing host to this championship. In the past these games were hosted in Tirupur and Sivakasi and after gap of more than gap of two decades this tournament is being hosted in our state.

“Individual matches will be hosted for men and women. The National Championship was hosted recently and the top eight teams from the respective regions will automatically qualify to participate in this Federation Cup National Basketball Championship. Each region will send its team who will play against other regions for the title.” Palaniswamy said.

“The matches will be played at the indoor stadium of PSG Tech and the public can watch the matches. No entry fee will be charged. The teams are divided into two pools and each pool will play 4 matches. The tournament schedule will be released tomorrow. Each day a minimum of four matches will be played and if we are allowed to make use of two courts, we can expect more matches to be played on each day of the tournament.” Parventhan said. We are also told that the Basketball Federation of India has hand-picked referees to judge this tournament.  

At this press meet it was also announce that the winning teams (men and women) will go home with a cash reward of Rs 1,00,000 while the first runner-up team will be given a cash reward of Rs 75,000. The teams that finish 3rd and 4th will receive a cash award of Rs. 50,000 and 25,000 respectively. “This time, the teams Tamil Nadu (Indian Overseas Bank team) and Uttarkhand (ONGC team) are the favourites among the men’s team and among the women’s team, all eyes are on the team representing Tamil Nadu. The women participants are provided accommodation at the PSG Institutions guest house and the men participants will be accommodated at a service apartment. Food and accommodation is provided free for all participants.” Balan said.

The first match of this championship will be played at 3 pm on 22 March and the formal inauguration of this tournament will be hosted the same day at 5 pm. About 40 to 45 lakhs is being spent to host this tournament.
