Elgi Equipments Donates Innovative Wheelchair and Stretcher Accessible Lift Vehicle to Ganga Spine Injury Foundation

The vehicle, worth Rs. 41 lakhs, is the first of its kind in the state and is custom-made to accommodate the needs of differently abled and spine injured individuals.

Coimbatore: In a commendable act of corporate social responsibility, Elgi Equipments Limited, based in Coimbatore, has donated a specially designed Force Tempo vehicle to the Ganga Spine Injury Foundation. The vehicle, worth Rs. 41 lakhs, is the first of its kind in the state and is custom-made to accommodate the needs of differently abled and spine injured individuals.

The Force Tempo vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair and stretcher accessible lift, making it a unique transport solution for patients with spine injuries and different abilities. It is intended for use in transporting these individuals from hospitals to rehabilitation centers, their homes, sports events, and vocational training centers. The vehicle boasts safety features like safety belts for wheelchairs, an in-built first aid kit, oxygen cylinders, and a suction apparatus for emergency care. Additionally, it can accommodate six wheelchairs, one stretcher, and two caregivers, all in a fully air-conditioned environment.

Ganga Spine Injury Foundation, established in 2014, is a philanthropic arm of Ganga Hospital. It focuses on rehabilitation activities for those with spinal cord injuries and is located in Kavundampalayam off Mettupalayam Road. The foundation also engages in research, education, and community-based rehabilitation programs. With a 36-bed inpatient capacity and treating 15 outpatients daily, the foundation offers subsidized rehabilitation costs to make it accessible for every patient.

Apart from rehabilitation services, the Ganga Spine Rehabilitation Centre conducts regular sports activities to improve the social and mental wellness of differently abled persons. Facilities for basketball, javelin, discus, shot put, and table tennis are available for patients. The center also possesses advanced rehabilitation equipment, like a virtual rehabilitation unit and hand & arm rehabilitation unit, to enhance the recovery process.

Highlighting its impact, the foundation boasts a significant track record in rehabilitating over 2000 patients, with 10 employed post-rehabilitation. About 30% of rehabilitated individuals return to their jobs, and many have achieved accolades in sports. Notably, Mr. Muthuraja won two bronze medals at the Asian Para-Olympic games in China in 2023, and Mr. Ramesh, a differently abled employee of the institution, secured a silver medal in wheelchair racing at the Kehlo India games in Delhi in January 2024.

This donation by Elgi Equipments Limited represents a substantial contribution to the differently abled community, offering them new avenues for mobility and independence.
