This marks a significant advancement in the treatment of patients with heavily calcified arteries, where traditional methods like cutting balloon and rotablation may not be as effective.
In this particular case, the patient's arteries were so calcified that initially, even a balloon could not pass through the blockage. The use of the orbital atherectomy technique, which involves a diamond crown rotating at high speeds to crack the calcium, followed by intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), which emits shock waves to break deep-seated calcium, allowed for successful stenting.
