GKNM Hospital's Cardiac Team Innovates with Orbital Tripsy to Treat Severe Heart Attack

A groundbreaking procedure combining orbital atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy, known as Orbital Tripsy, was successfully used at GKNM Hospital to treat a 75-year-old male with a severe heart attack caused by heavily calcified arteries.

Coimbatore: In a significant medical breakthrough, the expert cardiac team at GKNM Hospital, led by Dr. Bivin Wilson, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, has successfully treated a 75-year-old male patient who suffered a major heart attack.

The procedure utilized a combination of two novel techniques, orbital atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy (Orbital Tripsy), to open heavily calcified blocks before stenting. This marks a significant advancement in the treatment of patients with heavily calcified arteries, where traditional methods like cutting balloon and rotablation may not be as effective.

In this particular case, the patient's arteries were so calcified that initially, even a balloon could not pass through the blockage. The use of the orbital atherectomy technique, which involves a diamond crown rotating at high speeds to crack the calcium, followed by intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), which emits shock waves to break deep-seated calcium, allowed for successful stenting. This combined approach, referred to as Orbital Tripsy, resulted in an excellent outcome for the patient, showcasing the potential for these innovative techniques to improve cardiac care significantly.

This intervention is possibly one of the first instances in India where device synergy through Orbital Tripsy has been employed, highlighting GKNM Hospital's role at the forefront of cardiac treatment innovation. The successful treatment of this patient not only demonstrates the efficacy of these novel techniques but also opens new avenues for treating similar cases in the future.
