Karpagam College of Engineering Partners with Welding Research Institute for Technological Advancement

Karpagam College of Engineering, in a significant move to bolster industry-academic collaboration, has inked a MoU with the Welding Research Institute of BHEL, Tiruchirappalli, aiming to enrich students with advanced welding technologies and research opportunities.


Coimbatore: In an important step towards enhancing technical education and industry readiness among students, the Karpagam College of Engineering (KCE) entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Welding Research Institute (WRI) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli on February 14, 2024. This partnership marks a pivotal moment for KCE in its commitment to excellence in engineering education and research.



The MoU signing ceremony saw the presence of Dr. V. Kumar Chinnaiyan, Principal of KCE, alongside I. Kalyanasundaram, AGM/HEAD WRI, and Dr. B. Shanmugarajan, SDGM/WRI from BHEL. Highlighting the significance of this collaboration, Dr. Chinnaiyan expressed the college's dedication to establishing centres of excellence and research in emerging technologies, particularly in the realm of advanced welding, to prepare students for industry challenges.



WRI, recognized as India's leading research center in welding and related metal joining processes, brings to the table its extensive industry-oriented research capabilities. The institute aims to promote the application of innovative welding technologies across Indian industries, enhancing the quality and efficiency of manufacturing processes.

Officials from WRI, I. Kalyanasundaram and Dr. B. Shanmugarajan, emphasized the mutual benefits of this academic partnership. They expressed WRI's eagerness to collaborate with KCE to foster training and research in welding technology. As part of the MoU, WRI conducted an awareness program for KCE students, providing them with insights into the latest advancements in welding technology and the diverse areas of knowledge sharing, including:

- Development of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS & PQR)

- Weldability studies

- Metallurgical investigation & Failure analysis

- Simple Welding Automation

- Weld Audit

- Welding Problem Solving

This collaboration between KCE and WRI is expected to open new avenues for students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the rapidly evolving field of welding technology.
