Traffic Diversion due to PSG Pedestrian Bridge Demolition for Avinashi Flyover Construction

The pedestrian bridge connecting two campuses of PSG College in Peelamedu is being demolished to facilitate the construction of the 10.1 km Avinashi Flyover, leading to traffic diversions on Avinashi Road and rerouting through Sowripalayam, causing significant congestion.

Coimbatore: A significant chapter in the history of Peelamedu comes to a close as the iconic pedestrian bridge, a familiar sight and vital passage for over 15 years, is being dismantled to make way for the ambitious Avinashi Flyover project. The demolition work, which started yesterday, is expected to be completed by next Tuesday or at the latest by Wednesday, according to sources close to the development.

Installed in 2007, the foot-over-bridge spanned Peelamedu Road, with its entry and exit points strategically located at the PSG College of Technology and PSG Institute of Management. This infrastructure has been crucial in ensuring the safe passage of students across one of the busiest sections of the city, alongside benefiting the general public.

The commencement of the demolition is a direct consequence of the progress in the construction of the 10.1 km long Avinashi Flyover, a project aimed at easing traffic flow and enhancing connectivity in Coimbatore. With the flyover construction nearing the bridge's location, authorities have initiated the bridge's removal.

In response to the bridge's demolition, a pelican signal has been installed near the two educational institutions on a trial basis. The effectiveness of this temporary measure will be evaluated to decide on its permanence, ensuring pedestrian safety remains a priority during this transitional period.

However, some sources sat that this might not be a permanent goodbye to the pedestrian bridge. Reports say that approval has been granted for the construction of a new bridge at a height of 5.5 meters in the same area, with plans to commence work following the completion of the flyover project.

As the city braces for traffic reroutes and congestion due to the demolition, there's a collective anticipation for the infrastructural improvements poised to redefine Coimbatore's urban landscape.
