Muthumariamman Temple in Coimbatore Adorned with Lakhs Worth of Rupee Notes

The Muthumariamman Temple in Coimbatore was adorned with rupee notes valued at one lakh, as part of the annual Danalakshmi Puja during Tamil New Year celebrations.

Coimbatore: In a unique display of devotion and prosperity, the Muthumariamman Temple located in Kattoor near Coimbatore was adorned with rupee notes valued at one lakh. This yearly event, conducted during the Tamil New Year celebrations, used an assortment of 100, 200, and 500 denomination notes.

This ritual comes amidst the temple's special prayers during the festival season, a custom that sees the deity adorned in vibrant displays of currency notes. Local devotees contribute these notes, which are later adorned on the deity to perform the Danalakshmi Puja, a ritual invoking wealth and prosperity.

Following the ritual, the adorned notes are returned to the community, reinforcing the cycle of giving and blessings. The event draws large crowds each year, who come to witness the deity in this unique decoration. As per tradition, the temple ensures the decoration's value increases annually, but this year, due to election constraints, the offering was confined to one lakh rupees.

Last year, the temple had a more extravagant adornment with six crore rupees and valuable diamond and gold jewelry. The festivity ends with the redistribution of the notes to the participants, symbolizing the blessings of prosperity going back to the community.
