The protests started today, with locals participating in a continuous sit-in. Protesters have raised black flags to signify their dissent against both the central and state governments, leading to tensions in the area.
Additionally, 14 acres of land owned by a private company at Vellakovil Velappan Nayakkan Valasu and Gurukkupalaiyam are being developed for a substation and other constructions. Despite having several windmills in Karur district under the same company's ownership, the rural electrification plans are opposed by locals and have reportedly begun without proper permits, violating regulatory norms. Power tower installations across high-voltage paths are planned through public roads and potentially agricultural land, raising concerns among the farmers about the devaluation of their lands and disruption to agriculture.
Local farmers and administrative bodies are still in discord, with the lack of prior consultations or necessary approvals for land measurements by company employees, who have entered the premises threateningly, allegedly under state and central government collusion. Adding to the strife, a meeting held yesterday in Mayilrangam involving the agricultural union leaders ended without a resolution, signaling continued unrest among the farmers.
