Coimbatore to enhance security by installing advanced CCTV cameras in residential areas near railway tracks, following recent theft incidents. Over 100 locations targeted for increased surveillance.
Coimbatore: In response to recent theft incidents, Coimbatore city is set to fortify its residential areas close to railway tracks with advanced CCTV surveillance cameras. The decision follows a notable incident on February 7, where a group of four individuals successfully robbed a businessman's home in Peelamedu Poorani Nagar, escaping with cash and valuables worth several lakhs and exploiting the darkness and lack of surveillance to evade capture.
Following this event, the Coimbatore City Police have planned to install cameras at 103 key points along the tracks in the first phase of this security initiative. The areas selected for the installation include key spots from Singanallur to Vadavalli covering numerous points vulnerable to similar threats.

The primary locations under the Singanallur Police Station, including SIHS Colony and Irukur Railway Bridge, will see 22 cameras implemented across 20 spots. Meanwhile, Ratinapuri Police Station will gain 12 cameras in 6 areas. Additionally, Peelamedu Police Station will have cameras in 27 locations around Pothanur, Thudiyalur, and north Coimbatore regions. The initiative is being funded by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions to bolster community safety significantly. Today's announcement (April 18) marks a proactive step by local authorities towards curbing criminal activities and ensuring resident safety in Coimbatore.
