Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Polling Begins in Coimbatore.

The initial phase of the 18th Lok Sabha elections commenced today across 21 states, including Tamil Nadu. In Coimbatore, over 21 lakh voters are expected to participate in the polls. Strict security measures and detailed arrangements have been put in place to ensure an uninterrupted voting experience from 7 AM to 6 PM.


Coimbatore: The first phase of the 18th Lok Sabha elections has started, with voters from 102 constituencies across 21 states going to the polls. In Tamil Nadu, 950 candidates are competing for 39 seats. Approximately 6.23 crore voters are set to cast their votes at 68,321 polling stations throughout the state.

In Coimbatore, the constituency's spotlight is on the intense competition between BJP's State Chief K Annamalai, DMK's Ganapathy P Rajkumar, and AIADMK's Singai Ramachandran. The constituency has six assembly segments with a total of 21,06,124 registered voters, including 10,41,349 males, 10,64,394 females, and 381 transgenders. 



The assembly segments are Coimbatore South (243,220 voters), Coimbatore North (335,072 voters), Singanallur (327,491 voters), Sulur (321,803 voters), Kavundampalayam (462,612 voters), and Palladam (392,836 voters). The adjacent Pollachi constituency also has a sizable voter base of 15,97,467 across its six assembly segments with 7,73,433 male voters, 8,23,738 female voters, and 296 third gender voters.

All necessary polling materials including EVMs and VVPATs were dispatched to all 2059 polling centres across 584 locations, on Thursday. 



Enhanced enhanced security, particularly at sensitive booths have been arranged for smooth transition ofthe election.Provisions for elderly and disabled voters to vote from home have been implemented, reflecting efforts to increase voter participation. 



In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, CPI(M)'s PR Natarajan won the Coimbatore seat with 571,150 votes, defeating BJP's CP Radhakrishnan, who garnered 392,007 votes, and MNM's R Mahendran who received 145,104 votes. The DMK alliance secured a 45.7% share of the votes and triumphed with a winning margin of 14.4%.

The district administration led by Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati is pushing for higher voter turnout through various awareness campaigns, aiming for a 100% voting rate. The previous turnout in 2019 was 66.7% with 12,50,885 votes cast from a total of 19,09,712 voters.



As of early morning, there's a high turnout with voters looking to cast their votes before noon, avoiding the heat of the day. Polling will continue until 6 PM, providing ample time for all registered voters to participate.
