Intensified Surveillance at Tamil Nadu-Kerala Border Checkpoints Amid Bird Flu Outbreak in Kerala

Following a bird flu outbreak in Kerala, surveillance has been intensified at 12 checkpoints including Valayar along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border to monitor and prevent the spread.

Coimbatore: In response to the recent bird flu outbreak in Kerala, surveillance activities have been ramped up at 12 checkpoints, including Valayar, along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. The move aims to mitigate the spread of the H5N1 virus into Tamil Nadu from neighboring Kerala, where several ducks died consecutively at poultry farms in the Alappuzha district. The Veterinary Department confirmed the presence of the H5N1 infection in these cases.

The Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Department has intensified its vigilance at key border locations such as Anaikatti, Valayar, Velanthavalam, Melbavi, Mulli, Meenatchipuram, Gopalapuram, Semmanampathy, Veerapagoundanputhur, Nadupuni, Jameen Kaliapuram, and Vadakkadu. Special teams have been deployed to operate round-the-clock to ensure stringent border checks and sanitation procedures.

These checkpoints have teams actively monitoring vehicles entering Tamil Nadu from Kerala, especially focusing on vehicles transporting poultry-related items. Sanitization processes, including spraying vehicles with disinfectants, form a crucial part of their preventive measures against the bird flu virus. The efforts underline the importance of immediate and coordinated actions to prevent the spread of this severe disease.
