Work on pedestrian subway begins in Tambaram

To improve pedestrian safety, Southern Railway has proposed to construct two pedestrian subways - one at Tambaram and the other at Perungalathur - where 4,000 to 5,000 people cross the road every day.

The work on constructing a pedestrian subway near Tambaram was started a few days ago.

It will connect residents of east and west Tambaram, who hitherto were forced to cross the railway tracks or use a vehicular subway.

The subway will be built near the one already existing for two-wheelers and light motor vehicles near Suddhanda Bharathi Street at a cost of ₹2.8 crore.

“Initially, the date of completion was set as June this year, but it has been deferred due to various reasons and the contractors have been asked to complete the project at the earliest. The subway should become operational by September-end,” said a senior railway official.

It will be built using the ‘box jacking’ (or box pushing) technology.

Concrete boxes will be prepared at the construction site and pushed into their places using hydraulic power, Railway officials said.

Residents celebrate

Members of MES Road and Ganapathypuram Welfare Association, who have been demanding a pedestrian subway, since 2010, hailed the decision and sought the speedy completion of the work.
